Dear Chuck,

Credit cards are killing me, and it feels like getting a handle on money is some kind of 12-step program. Where do I begin?

Feeling Overwhelmed.

Dear Overwhelmed,

Well, I have some good news and bad news. The good news is that it’s not the credit cards that are killing you. The bad news is that it’s the lack of savings!

Help! I'm caught between church and credit cards

Dear Chuck,

I need some help. I am a 50 year-old widow with a teenager at home, and I’m using credit cards to survive, drowning in late fees. I am over extended and miserable. My income cannot support my obligations so I decided to find a part-time job in the evenings and weekends. But now I am taken away from my weekly involvement and support system in church, leaving me very unhappy. Still, I don't have any other way of paying off these credit cards. What should I do? Please help.

Struggling Widow

Dear Widow,

My team and I will pray for you as you and your child go forward in life. Please know you can contact us for more personal help.

Do you want to get out of debt in the New Year?!

Dear Chuck,

I read your column about making New Year’s resolutions, and I’ve made mine: Get out of debt. It’s not my first attempt, but I’m hopeful that this time I can do it. I wish I had a more creative tale of woe, but it’s basically the same old boy-goes-to-college, boy-gets-loans-and-credit-cards, boy-wants-out! How should I get started?

Looking for a New Beginning

Dear New Beginning,

Congratulations on deciding to take another run at getting out of debt. I will address the student loans and the credit cards alike. And yes, you can do this! The final chapter to your tale should be three steps to boy-pays-off-all-debt!

Dear Chuck,

Should I buy a car from Craigslist? There seems to be a lot of great deals from private sellers. And I would love to pay cash rather than have a car payment. But the process seems so daunting. Many of the posts look like scams, and most sellers say "cash only" but I don't want to carry that much cash. Is it worth the trouble?

Sincerely,

Craigslist Newbie

Dear Newbie,

Thanks for the great question. It’s one that I answer in the affirmative (it is worth the trouble) as I personally just used Craigslist to help my 18-year old son buy a used car. And yes, we paid cash to do it.

Dear Chuck,

My elderly parents are considering a reverse mortgage because they are struggling on a fixed income. Is that a good idea? Could it do more harm than good?

Worried for Mom and Dad

Dear Worried,

I share your concerns about reverse mortgages, called “the ugly stepchildren of the home-lending industry” by CNBC, and they may be right. I tend to agree with their analysis that “most financial advisors see the products as a last resort for cash-strapped seniors—and a bad one at that. They are expensive, restrictive and usually don't provide enough income to help borrowers meet their financial needs for very long.”

Dear Chuck,

What are the rules when a bank repossesses your car? Do you still have to pay them what you owe and can they garnish your wages for payment? I have a friend who has just turned her life over to Christ and over the years she has made many, many bad decisions, and her financial situation is overwhelming.

Dear Chuck,

It’s back to school time for many families, but my children are finishing college and newly graduated, so I’m less concerned now that they have a diploma– and more worried about the debt they accumulated – the nasty student loan kind of debt.. Do you have any advice for my family and me?

Dear Chuck,

What is your view of payday lending? It seems like Crown would have some insight on the perils of such loans and whether there are alternative ways to secure a “small-dollar loan” such as through church lending clubs, or some other means.

Considering my options
