Bing Crosby recorded this song and it’s the third best selling single ever recorded. I’m sure you know it.

HOTW__Dec_24.jpgA young priest, Father Joseph Mohr, had written the lyrics in his native German language a few years earlier but sought the help of composer Franz Gruber, to come up with the music to the lyrics.  In 1818, at St. Nicholas Parish Church in Oberndorf, Austria the song was first performed on Christmas Eve.   This song we all know and love was sung simultaneously in English and German by troops during the Christmas truce of 1914 during World War I. It has been translated into 140 languages and is now in the public domain.

In the midst of all the busy-ness of the season, if you are able, I want to suggest that tonight you take a moment to walk outside, look up into the sky and ponder the beauty of this event as you sing these words:

Silent night, holy night, all is calm, all is bright

Round yon virgin mother and child.

Holy infant, so tender and mild,

Sleep in heavenly peace, sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night, holy night, shepherds quake at the sight;

Glories stream from heaven afar,

Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!

Christ the Savior is born, Christ the Savior is born!

Silent night, holy night, Son of God, love's pure light;

Radiant beams from thy holy face

With the dawn of redeeming grace,

Jesus, Lord, at thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.

Silent night, holy night, wondrous star, lend thy light;

With the angels let us sing,

Alleluia to our King;

Christ the Savior is born, Christ the Savior is born!
